Building Repeat Customers for an Electrical Business
Homeowners don't need an electrician every month. They need one when something breaks, when they buy an EV, when they add a room or when the power goes out one too many times and they start thinking about a generator. The question is whether they call you again when that day comes, or search for someone new.
Repeat Work Starts on the First Visit
In Service Calls vs Install Work: Balancing the Mix in an Electrical Business, the service call was described as the front door of the business. Repeat customers are what happens when that front door leads somewhere.
Most of what makes someone call back is decided on the first job. Did the tech show up when they said? Did the customer know they were coming? Was the price what they expected? Was the house left clean? Did anyone explain what was found? None of that is technical. All of it is remembered.
Make the First Visit Easy to Remember
A few habits make a first visit stick:
- Tell them when you're coming. Automatic texts the night before, when they're next on the route, and when the tech arrives. The customer picks which ones they want.
- Show them the work. Before and after photos taken in the tech app stay on the job.
- Leave something in writing. On an inspection visit, the printed Electrical Safety Inspection report gives the homeowner the condition and recommendations in plain language.
- Make paying simple. Card on file, charged when the tech taps Complete, or online payment from the customer app.
Remember the House So They Don't Have To
The most impressive thing an electrical company can say on the phone is “We were out in March for the breaker in the kitchen — is this the same panel in the garage?” That only works if the history is saved.
In ElectricalBossPro, every property keeps its equipment list — panels, generator, transfer switch, EV charger, surge protector and more — along with past jobs, notes and photos. The next tech walks in knowing what the last one found. The customer feels like they are dealing with one company, not a different stranger each time.
It also keeps the office honest. When a customer calls about a light that flickers, the office can see the electrician was there two weeks ago for something in the same room, and treat the call with the care it deserves instead of booking it as a brand new job.
Give Them a Reason to Come Back on Schedule
The surest repeat customer is one on a plan. A yearly electrical safety inspection or a yearly generator maintenance visit turns a one-time customer into an annual one. Recurring work is set by minimum days between visits, and when a visit comes due it shows on the Waiting List, so the office books it without anyone keeping a list of renewal dates.
Customers can sign up for plans and their pricing in the customer app or through a website sign-up form that captures their card. The plans side of the business has its own articles later in this series, including Growing Maintenance Plan Revenue in an Electrical Business.
Make Booking Again the Easiest Option
When a customer needs an electrician again, the easiest number to find wins. Give them yours in as many places as possible:
- The customer app, where they can request service directly.
- Texts from your business number that they can reply to.
- Invoices and the inspection report with your contact details.
- A sticker or label near the panel, if that is your practice.
Requests from the customer app arrive tied to the customer and the address, so the office knows who is asking and what is at the house before calling back.
Stay in Touch Without Being a Pest
Repeat customers don't want weekly marketing emails. They want useful contact: a reminder when the generator is due for its yearly visit, a heads-up before the inspection, a follow-up on the panel upgrade estimate. Two-way texting lets the office answer questions quickly when they come in.
A general reminder to test GFCIs and smoke detectors, or to keep the panel area clear, can be a friendly touch once or twice a year. Anything that sounds like a problem should end with “call us and we'll send someone out.”
Ask How It Went
Customers can rate the visit in the customer app. Read those ratings. A great one tells you which tech to thank. A poor one tells you who to call back before they tell their neighbors. Customers who are happy can also refer someone through the app, which is covered in the next article.
