The Owner-Operator's Electrician App: Service Calls, Routing and Billing From One Phone
A one-van electrical business is a lot of jobs in one person. You are the electrician, the dispatcher, the estimator, the billing department and the person who answers the phone while standing in someone's garage. Most software is built for shops with an office manager. When you are the office, you need the office in your pocket.
One Person, Both Sides of the App
Generator visits, covered in The Generator Maintenance Visit, Start to Finish in the Electrician App, are a great example of work an owner-operator can run almost on autopilot. This guide looks at the whole day.
ElectricalBossPro has an office side and a tech side. In a bigger shop, different people use each. As an owner-operator, you use both, often on the same phone. The office side runs in the browser like the tech app, so you can check the Waiting List from a customer's driveway and build tomorrow's route from the couch.
Morning: Build the Day in Minutes
Start with the Waiting List. Yearly safety inspections and generator maintenance plans that have come due show on the map, colored by status. Add today's service calls and any approved estimates that became scheduled jobs. Put them on today, auto-route Closest First or Furthest First from the shop, and drag any timed calls into place.
Then switch to the tech app, clock in, and your calls are there in route order. The same order the office side shows, because you just set it.
On the Road: Let the App Talk to Customers
When you are the only one in the business, every phone call costs you time on the job. The automatic texts are a big help:
- Night-before reminders go out without you remembering to send them.
- On-the-way texts go out as you finish one call and head to the next.
- Arrived texts go out when you tap Start at the door.
Customers know when to expect you, so fewer of them call to ask. Replies come into two-way texting, where you can answer when you have a minute instead of mid-job.
At Each House: Card, Work, Complete
Read the job card in the driveway: the equipment saved on the house, the access notes, the past notes. Tap Start, do the work, take before-and-after photos, and fill in the safety inspection checklist on inspection jobs. Tap Complete.
Complete creates the invoice and can charge the card on file. For an owner-operator, that is the biggest time-saver of all. No evening billing session, no stack of invoices to type, no reminder calls for small jobs. A $99 service call or a $165 GFCI replacement is paid before you back out of the driveway.
The job card matters even more when you are alone. There is no office to call for the garage code or the location of the subpanel. If it is on the house, you have it. Every note you write and every equipment detail you fix is a gift to yourself next year, when you are back at the same house and cannot remember a thing about it.
Between Calls: Estimates and Sign-Ups
The other half of running a one-van shop is selling the next job. Estimates are built from your service list — service calls, troubleshooting, outlets, GFCIs, ceiling fans, recessed lighting, surge protectors, EV charger installs, panel upgrades, generator installs, whatever you set up. The customer approves online, and the approved estimate becomes a scheduled job. Estimate follow-up emails nudge customers who have not decided.
Website requests and sign-ups land in Form Responses. When you have a minute between calls, one click converts a sign-up into a client.
End of Day: Nothing Left to Do
When the last call is completed, clock out. Look at the day: calls done, invoices created, cards charged, anything unpaid already on past-due follow-up. Tomorrow's due visits are on the Waiting List. There is no paperwork waiting at the kitchen table. That is the real reason to run a one-van shop on a tech app: your evenings come back.
Room to Grow
Most owner-operators eventually hire. When you add a helper or a second electrician, give them their own PIN and van assignment, and the setup you already built keeps working. A common next step is one van on service calls and one on installs, inspections and generators. Plans run $59/month on Start, $89 on Pro and $199 on Crew, so you can move up when the business does. Adding people is covered in Apprentices and Helpers in the Electrician App: Who Logs In and Who Rides Along.
