The Safety Inspection Checklist in the Electrician App, Item by Item
A yearly electrical safety inspection is one of the best recurring services an electrical contractor can sell. It brings you back to the same houses every year, it gives the homeowner something they can see, and it often turns up work they want done. It is also easy to do inconsistently. One tech writes three lines on the invoice, another fills a page by hand, and a year later nobody can compare the two.
A Checklist on the Phone, Not a Clipboard
The history of each house is covered in Past Notes on the Job Card: What the Last Electrician Saw at This House. The inspection checklist is the structured part of that history.
In ElectricalBossPro, the safety inspection checklist lives on the tech app. The tech opens the job, taps Start, and works through the list on the phone. Every item, every reading and every recommendation lands on the job in the office the moment the tech saves it. There is no clipboard to lose in the van and no handwriting for the office to decipher.
The Checklist Items
The checklist covers the areas a residential safety inspection usually touches:
- Main panel inspected (cover off)
- Breakers tested and labeled
- AFCI breakers tested
- GFCI outlets tested
- Grounding and bonding checked
- Surge protection checked
- Lugs and connections checked for heat or looseness
- Outlets and switches
- Smoke and CO detectors
- Exterior outlets and covers
- Meter base and service drop
- Generator / transfer switch tested
- EV charger checked
Not every house has every item. A house without a generator or EV charger simply leaves those unchecked. The point is that the same list is in front of every tech at every inspection, so nothing gets forgotten because it was a busy day.
Your Techs Make the Calls
The checklist is a record, not a procedure. It does not tell anyone how to test a breaker or what a reading should be. Your electricians bring the training and judgment; the app makes sure what they did and what they found is written down the same way every time.
That matters for the business as much as for the homeowner. When every inspection follows the same list, you can hand any inspection job to any qualified tech and get a record that looks like the rest. Training a new tech on your inspection service becomes a matter of walking them through the list on a real job.
Readings, Condition and Recommendations
Below the checklist are fields for readings: voltage L1-N, L2-N and L1-L2, main breaker amps, measured load, ground resistance, panel age, the hottest spot from an IR scan, and issues found. Recording those is covered in Recording Voltage, Load and IR Scan Readings in the Electrician App.
Then the tech picks a condition — Good, Needs attention or Repair recommended — and writes recommendations in plain words. That last part is what the homeowner reads most closely, so it gets its own guide later in this series.
Equipment and Photos Tie It Together
The inspection does not live in isolation. The job card already shows the main panel, subpanels, generator, transfer switch, EV charger and surge protector saved on the house, so the tech knows what should be on the checklist before starting. If the tech finds equipment that is not on file, or details that are wrong, they can update it on the job and the change flows back to the house.
Before-and-after photos fill in the picture. A photo of the panel with the cover off, the breaker directory, or the generator's nameplate sits on the same job as the checklist, which makes the inspection record far more useful a year later.
What the Office and Homeowner Get
When the tech saves the checklist and taps Complete, the office sees the whole inspection on the job: items checked, readings, condition and recommendations. From there the office can print an Electrical Safety Inspection report for the homeowner.
The yearly plan takes care of next year. Safety inspection plans are set by minimum days between visits — 365 for a yearly inspection — so the house comes due on the Waiting List again on its own. The customer can be signed up for the plan from the customer app or the office, and each year's checklist builds on the last.
If you price your inspection at something like $149, that is a service the homeowner can see they received, with a report to show for it. To see the checklist alongside the rest of the tech app, visit the ElectricalBossPro electrician app page.
